Australian renewable energy and investment firm, Edify Energy, has reportedly landed a $6.5 million grant from the New South Wales (NSW) government and a $6.6 million grant from the federal agency Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
The funding will be utilized in installing a battery energy storage system having advanced inverter technology, which will be located near its Darlington Point Solar Farm in Australia’s Riverina region.
The Darlington Point battery project is one of the three co-located energy storage systems that will have a total storage capacity of 150 MW/300 MWh.
Based out of Sydney, Edify announced last month that it was done with the financing of the project and that the energy storage systems will utilize Tesla Megapack technology and grid-forming inverters that will run in a ‘virtual synchronous generator’ mode.
The firm stated that the storage system will operate like a conventional generator and offer crucial system strength services for mitigating the connection of clean energy power plants in the region in the future as well.
ARENA stated that the project will make the Darlington Point area future-proof as the generation of renewable energy continues expanding towards south-western NSW.
The project supposedly aims to connect to the Transgrid network, which manages high voltage electricity transmission in NSW and the Australian Capital Territory in the country, through the substation at Darling Point.
The agency added that Edify’s battery system will be one of the most advanced in the National Electricity Market, and expand the capabilities of large-scale batteries having advanced inverter technology.
Chris Faris, acting CEO, ARENA, stated that in order to support the rapid transformation of the country’s electricity system, large-scale batteries have to evolve and do more than store energy.
Faris added that Edify’s Darling Point battery, a large-scale battery, can not only solidify renewable energy but also strengthen the grid, especially in areas where more interest in renewables can be unlocked.
Previously, ARENA had backed Edify for the Gannawarra Solar Farm project in 2018.
