Do you like to walk? It’s good. It is good for the healt. And vice versa, walking at a normal pace is synonymous with good health. Do you know that American researchers can tell you your state of health based on your walking speed? Yes, that seems quite logical. A weak person cannot have the same walking speed as a very energetic and very dynamic person.
The latter will have more ease to walk faster while a person under treatment is affected in his strength, therefore in his ability to move. The speed of our walking is therefore a new indicator of our physical condition behind our blood pressure and our BMI. Don’t be surprised any longer when you visit your doctor, he may be interested in the speed at which you walk.
The speed of our walking, a factor of mortality prediction
Are you walking fast enough or slow enough? Your answer is very important for your doctor to determine your life expectancy. Indeed, according to a recent study conducted by university researchers, the speed of our walking is a good predictor of mortality. They suggested that physicians add this new indicator to the observations of their patients’ states of health. In fact, depending on what came out of it, the faster the rhythm, the healthier the patient.
And therefore, a slow walk means a deterioration in our state of health . These researchers have associated slow walking with cardiovascular diseases, certain types of cancer or cognitive disorders. When we are attacked by these diseases, we lose a lot of strength and this is reflected in the way and the speed with which we walk.
Walking slowly means disease
Even when you are sick, it is always beneficial to walk. Walking is good for health. But that doesn’t mean we have to walk faster to perform better. The main thing is to keep our natural rhythm. Indeed, according to recent studies, the slowing down of the speed of our walking is synonymous that we encounter a health problem. There may be an underlying condition. The speed of our walk can also indicate our age.
Did you not know that to spot an old person, we observe their gait? And that without seeing his face. Why ? Because as our body ages, our ability to move more is reduced. A slower gait can therefore mean either deterioration of health, or aging.
Walking faster does nothing
Yes, contrary to what you thought, it is useless to walk faster to feel better . We have already mentioned it above. It is important to keep walking as long as we can, but that does not mean that we should increase the speed of our walking. However, researchers have shown that walking at an average speed or faster means that we are physically dynamic and strong. This reduces our rate of mortality risk. The speed of our walking that we are talking about here therefore relates to the speed at which we naturally walk when we have no health problems. Increasing it expressly does not make us gain better health.
Experience on the speed of our walking
Walking is a gentle sport that does not require greater physical effort. And practiced daily, it can be really beneficial for our health. To confirm the hypothesis that the speed of our walking reflects our health, researchers at the University of San Diego in the United States experimented with voluntary individuals composed of men and women aged between 18 to 55 years.
They asked them to walk on devices equipped with treadmills . They were also equipped with various detection equipment to be able to determine the speed of their walk such as a pedometer to record their number of steps. They were each made to wear a mask on their face to be able to analyze their breathing, that is to say the level of oxygen and carbon dioxide they emit. The researchers also took their heart pressure to determine the intensity of their physical activity and the calories burned while walking.
The results of the study
The results of this study on the walking speed of these voluntary individuals were published in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine. They walked at speeds different from 3.8; 4.8; 5.6 and 6.6 km/h. And the frequencies of their walking included between 55 and 135 steps per minute. Those who had walked more slowly were logically weaker.
The researchers looked for the reason and they managed to show that they had encountered some health problems and/or had difficulty to recover from their surgery. Those who walked faster are probably those who were in very good health. Doctors can therefore use the speed of our walk to determine how we are doing.
Walking to stay in shape
Walking, whatever the speed of our walking, is good for the health of our whole organism and especially for our heart. This is why it is recommended to walk at least 20 mn per day (the equivalent of 10 not ) or 20 min 5 times a week to stay healthy. Walking boosts our immune system and strengthens our bones. Moreover, it is very good for our morale. It helps us calm down in times of stress and anxiety. In short, the main thing is to keep your natural rhythm so as not to create other health problems.
